Paper Abstract

Place elements in Urban design public gardens in Hanoi historical inner city toward sustainable development

The place values-“place identity” combines many factors, including spatial characteristics, natural features, and cultural and historical conditions. These are the intrinsic, outstanding, and distinctive features of a place, which are the factors that help us recognize, feel, and distinguish one place from another. Identifying specific values and concretizing these values into urban planning and urban design is one of the essential content to ensure the implementation of planning projects. Bringing planning closer to reality, creating convenience for the planning implementation and management, and making the construction area develop sustainably. For modern urban, gardens and parks always play an essential role, being a necessary part of the system of green space and urban spatial structure. It contributes to improving the urban environment and enhancing the quality of citizen life. The Government, experts, and communities paid attention to offering policies, design options, renovation, and management of the system of public gardens in the historic inner city area. However, the reality of public gardens is still many difficulties and challenges; many public gardens still do not promote functional value and have not created landmarks in urban spatial. Therefore, identifying the “place” values of public gardens in Hanoi’s historical inner city will be a helpful tool, contributing to improving principles and Urban design solutions to ensure the planning, renovation, and sustainable development of the public garden in Hanoi.
